An 18-year-old international student had thousands of dollars taken from him while trying to travel to his university.

The international student arrived at O’Hare International Airport on August 20 at 5 p.m. and planned to take the bus back to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which is located about two hours away.

Then he was approached by a white male who explained the bus wouldn’t come until midnight and offered to give the international student a ride for $1,000.

The international student accepted the offer. After they arrived at the university the driver then ordered he be paid $4,800.

The student only had $4,240 and that’s what he gave the driver. He also left his phone in the vehicle, estimated value of $650. So the total amount the student lost was $4,890.

The international student went to the Champaign police who then handed the information over to the University police.

The University police said they do have some possible license plate information and they’re trying to work with the police at the O’Hare International Airport. The vehicle was a dark SUV.

According to World Taxi Meter, the cost of the trip should have been around $290.  So with some simple math it shows about a 1,700% markup on the price or he could have taken about 16 trips back and forth from Chicago to Champaign.

Before traveling anywhere students should do research in advance to get an approximate price on how much traveling should cost. And never forget the most simple rule, never take a ride from strangers.
