International PhD Student Accused of Spying and Treason Released

An international PhD student arrested for spying and treason was released from custody. Read the latest details here.

Alexander Sodiqov, a doctoral student in political science was in Tajikistan conducting research when he was arrested under suspicion of treason and spying.

A little more than a month later, on Tuesday, July 22 he was released.

Sodiqov is a Tajik citizen who is a student at the University of Toronto. He was under contract from the University of Exeter in England to do a three-week research project. He arrived in Tajikistan on June 16 to conduct interviews regarding his research about power and conflict in Central Asia.
