Out of the many events that Kuwaiti students are excited about, the most proud moment of them all is our National and Liberation Days. Learn more about these holidays!

The two major holidays in Kuwait are National Day and Liberation Day. It was no coincidence that we were liberated from the Gulf War in 1991 a day after our National Day – it was a result of motivation for freedom.

February 2015, Ambassador to Kuwait His Highness Salem AlAbdullah AlJaber AlSabah and Mrs. Salem Al-Sabah celebrated the 54th anniversary of the National Day of the State of Kuwait and the 24st anniversary of its Liberation during Desert Storm at the Four Seasons Hotel. Many guests waited in a line to greet the Ambassador and his wife (I personally managed to take a selfie with the Ambassador that went haywire around the internet and the press!) but what was more exciting was the taste from home: the buffet of Middle Eastern dishes of lamb, different types of rice and the freshest of sea food.

It means so much for international students to have a taste and gathering of their own culture – especially if its through an event that celebrates your nation’s independence and freedom, there isn’t a prouder moment to compare. Coming together in a very prestigious event, to greet important figures from all over the world also allow Kuwaiti students (and other Middle Eastern students) an opportunity to show their culture and celebrate it diversely.

Gently observing how students behave, it was exciting to find out that they were so comfortable around their own people – it almost felt like home! To be able to eat from their own culture, listen to their own music and dress culturally made our students so energetic; but what really triggered their comfort was their ability to diversely share their culture with the world on foreign soil.

There were a number of famous figures that attended the event, including His Highness Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and CNN news anchor Wolf Blitzer; several cultural attachès, Ambassadors and other diplomatic figures were there too.
